From Batesville in the north to Friendship and Farmers Retreat near the south end of the county, Ripley is a wealth of scenic
beauty, history, and agriculture. Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's Civil War Raid, the infamous "Hanging Tree" incident
in Versailles in 1897, the creation of the Jefferson Proving Ground in 1940 and the loss of tens of thousands of acres of
farmland to the "War Department" for a very important munitions testing facility that served the United States through five
wars - these are all significant events in Ripley County history.
